When unresolved trauma is stored in the body, it can cause multiple mental health disorders. The goal of trauma therapy is to help individuals release built-up tension and stress associated with a traumatic experience/s so that their body can return to its relaxed state.
Here are five of the most effective trauma therapy treatments:
Cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT): Cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT) is a type of talking therapy aimed at helping you manage problems by changing your thoughts and behaviours. Trauma-focused CBT uses different psychological techniques to assist you in dealing with the traumatic event.
Dialectical Behaviour Therapy (DBT): DBT is a type of therapy designed to help individuals manage difficult emotions and improve their ability to function in daily life. It focuses on learning and practising skills to regulate emotions, tolerate distress, improve interpersonal effectiveness, and cultivate mindfulness.
Eye movement desensitisation and reprocessing (EMDR): EMDR involves focusing on a distressing memory while simultaneously engaging in bilateral stimulation, like eye movements or tapping, to facilitate reprocessing of the memory.
Emotional Freedom Technique (EFT): EFT involves tapping on specific meridian points on the body, typically with fingertips, to address emotional and psychological distress by restoring energy balance and reducing blockages believed to cause negative feelings.
Somatic Experiencing Therapy (SE): Offers a framework to help assess where a person is stuck in their fight, flight, freeze, or fawn response and provides clinical tools to help move through these states.
